Dimije are voluminous, highly pleated trousers central to traditional Balkan folk costume. Originating from ancient şalvar styles and popular during the Ottoman era, these wide-legged pants taper dramatically to tight gathers at the ankle. Wealthier wearers commissioned versions in opulent silk, satin, or velvet, often heavily embellished with intricate gold thread (srma) embroidery. In a complete ensemble, dimije were paired with a crisp white linen blouse and a structured vest (jelek).
