Born to a Jewish mother, Bauer immigrated to the United States after Nazi persecution and accepted a position at Saint Louis University. Bauer was also known for his friendship with Kurt von Schuschnigg, chancellor of Austria in the 1930s and a friend from Innsbruck whom Bauer invited to teach at Saint Louis University in the 1940s.
