The material consists of correspondence from John R. Bradstreet, S.J., a California Province Jesuit, to his sister Consuelo in the years just prior to, during, and immediately after his service as a United States Army chaplain in the Second World War. There are also a few letters to Bradstreet from soldiers with whom he had served, and several notes to Consuelo from family members as well as acquaintances of her brother. The letters in this collection give an account of the daily experiences of a non-combat chaplain, as well as wartime living conditions in Great Britain and the United States, including air raid drills, shortages, the relief of victory, and the renewed fear of world conflict with the rise of communism. The materials also provide an intriguing view of a postwar Hawaii under heavy military influence. The collection contains items from 1941 to 1995, with the bulk of the material covering the years 1943 to 1946. The collection is organized into three series: 1. Biography; 2. Correspondence; and 3.
