Eugene F. Karst Collection

 Collection
Identifier: 623

Scope and Contents

The Eugene F. Karst Collection contains a variety of articles, newspapers, pamphlets, publications, correspondence, posters, and travel items related to Mr. Karst's work for the U. S. State Department in Central and Latin America. Much of the material in the collection is from Karst's time as a press attache and information officer in Argentina (1950-1952), El Salvador (1955), Brazil (1960-1962), and Paraguay (1968). The materials reveal an interest in geography and travel, perceptions of the U.S. abroad, and politics in Latin America, with a particular emphasis on the populist Argentinian leaders Eva and Juan Perón. As a reporter and editor, Karst wrote a number of articles and publications seeking to relay information about Latin America and to bolster the U.S.'s position on the international stage, as well as various cultural topics after his retirement.
