Scope and Contents

This folder contains letters from correspondents whose last or organization names begin with the letter R.

Correspondents include: Robert Redfield, Abbott P. Herman, Reverend Thomas F. Regan, The Register, John H. Rhomberg, Lela Hayes Robison, Martha and Martina Robison, J.H. Rogers, Carole Rogers, Rollins College, Emilie Romaine, Sister Rose Victoria, Rosemont College, Mother M.A. Rossi, Rule's Clinic and Hospital, John Ruffert, Ruth (last name unlisted), Leo F. Ruttle, John and Mary Ann Robison, Alice R.

Notable correspondence: Robert Redfield comments on the four kinds of Catholicism--formal, nominal, cultural, and folk--that Allen Spitzer distinguishes in Tepoztlan, Mexico (3-28-57). He advises Spitzer not to refer to them as a continuum (2-17-58) and in reply to a letter from Spitzer he writes: "When you write that you will use the word 'typology' rather than 'continuum' because it is my advice and not because you quite understand it, I demur, I shake my head. I do not think that in science one should say what someone advises one to say but should say only what one understands and finds, one's self, convincing" (3-5-58). There are many letters from Lillian Spitzer's mother, Lela Hayes Robison, and sisters, Martha and Martina Robison. Martha asks for details about Allen Spitzer's illness: "Was it the end of the thigh bone near the hip or near the knee? Was the prosthesis inserted?" (5-10-65) Ruth (no last name) comments on the Spitzers' both being in the hospital, and Allen Spitzer responds to a request from Rollins College alumni of the class of 1934 to write a letter in honor of Dean Enyart.
