Notable correspondence: Communications from California state agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and various schools in the University of California system. Several letters concern Allen Spitzer's application to the School of Social Welfare at Berkeley for graduate study of social work; included with them is a page of notes on his meeting with Henry Maas, a member of the faculty, and Spitzer's personal statement of his past history, goals, and objectives (April-August 1953). Paul Hanley Furfey of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C. congratulates Allen on his achievements: "You must have outstanding qualities to be appointed to a teaching position at Stanford in spite of the anti-Catholic feeling there." Ammon Hennacy relates that he "was arrested a week ago for selling Catholic Workers [copies of "The Catholic Worker"] at 43 and Lexington [in New York City]. [. . .] We will go back each Friday. Dorothy [Day] says that under no circumstance will we compromise on principle."
