Scope and Contents

In July 1907, Florence Pretz Smalley published illustrations for "Billiken's Umbrella," a short story written by Sara Hamilton Birchall about an elvish Billiken's use of a toadstool as an umbrella. Years after its initial publication in "The Canada-West Magazine," Florence Pretz Smalley continued illustrations for the same storyline in "The First Umbrella," a project which includes one watercolor and one ink drawing created after 1912. "Bubble Fairies," a project similarly themed around water, includes two watercolor and two ink illustrations from circa 1910s.
