Florence Pretz Smalley published illustrations for "Mr. Cricket and His Flute," a short story by Sara Hamilton Birchall in the "Canada-West Magazine" in October 1907. A two-sided ink drawing circa 1907 illustrates the cricket playing its flute to a ring of fairies under the moonlight. Later illustrations of the cricket, developed after 1912, include one watercolor and two ink drawings (some with pencil sketches on the back) and depict the cricket playing the violin and cello.

Three watercolor illustrations were drawn circa 1920s for the the unpublished project "Grasshopper Green" about the adventures of a grasshopper with elvish creatures.
