Last Supper (Reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci, Berlin, 1931) On Display Winterhaven. FL, 1931-1957
Scope and Contents
Ravenna's parent company in Berlin, United Workshops for Mosaic and Glass Painting Puhl-Wagner-Heinersdorff, executes in mosaic a copy of Da Vinci's _Last Supper_ fresco under the direction of Robert Richter, the German artist who had painted a copy of the fresco. Here are a brochure describing the mosaic and newspaper articles about the achievement. Ravenna attempted to sell the mosaic in Boston, and the German ambassador sent a letter to the consul there asking him to facilitate Ravenna's plans (10-3-1931). By June of the following year Gerdt A. Wagner's father August is writing that the pamphlets "may be useful to you with the architects and artists of Cincinnati" (6-22-1932), and in December Gerdt writes Berlin that the National Shrine in Washington, DC "has no funds, so that the purchase of the Last Supper is not to be counted on at this time" (12-23-1932). In 1957 Kenneth Curtis of Lake Wales, FL inquires about causes of fading of the mosaic, "installed here for five years" in direct sunlight (7-30-1957).
