Biography
Wilhelm Hans Bauer was a medical doctor and Director of Pathology at Saint Louis University’s Dental School. Persecuted during World War II because of his Jewish ancestry, Bauer immigrated from Austria to the United States and worked at Saint Louis University, where he also invited his close friend Kurt von Schuschnigg, the former chancellor of Austria, to teach.
Born in Prague in 1886, Bauer received a medical degree and trained in dentistry in Austria. He worked at the University of Innsbruck, where he directed its dental clinic. Bauer gained international reputation for his work, including serving in 1936 as the vice-president of the 9th International Dental Congress in Vienna. Baptized Catholic, Bauer was born to a Jewish mother and was subsequently persecuted for his ancestry during World War II. He was forced to resign from the University of Innsbruck and immigrated to the U.S. in December 1938. At Saint Louis University, Bauer researched early tooth development and dental pathology.
A close friend of Kurt von Schuschnigg, the chancellor of Austria, Bauer played a pivotal role in inviting Schuschnigg to immigrate to the United States and teach political science at Saint Louis University. Bauer married Marie Utitz, with whom he had three children. He died in 1956.
