The personal collection of Elsie Roth, RN (of St. Louis, MO) documents the war and the relief missions she organized in the mid-1990s.

The collection includes slides, photographs, videotapes, audio tapes, newspaper articles, color reproductions of original artwork drawn by children in Sarajevo, a t-shirt (Maybe Airlines Sarajevo), a flak Jacket worn by Roth on one trip, and miscellaneous papers and handwritten notes.

Biographical / Historical

Roth was working as a nurse in Saint Louis when the fighting began. She recruited three other nurses and conviced Hadassah, the world's largest Jewish women's organization and a dedicated humanitarian and activist group, to sponsor a trip to the besieged capital to provide aid and conduct a need-assessmen for future trips. Roth and other volunteers returned to Sarajevo again in Feruary 1995 with 33 tons of supllies and again in April 1996 with ab addutuibak 75 tons. The effort provided more than 108 tons of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, new warm clothing, and toiletries valued at more than 10 million dollars.
