Context and Notes

The origins of the coffee cuture in Bosnia-Herzegovina date back to the Ottoman era. Bosanska Kahva encompasses both a specific preparation and a way of life. Bosnian coffee is about ritual, hospitality, conversation, and connection, or ćejf, a deliberate way of nourishing ourselves and interacting with the world around us.

Bosanska Kahva

Kahveni Takum – coffee set

Džezva – long-handled pot used to boil and froth coffee

Fildžani – small, handle-less porcelain cups, typically wrapped in decorative metal holders to provide a barrier to the heat

Šećerluk – sugar dish for sugar cubes

Tabla – round tray that holds the entire set

Sets are traditionally made from copper, but silver and brass are also common. High-quality pieces are crafted from metal that is hand-pounded and engraved with traditional decorative patterns.

The fine-ground, unfiltered coffee is usually served with water (for palate-cleansing) and accompanied by rahat lokum (a sweet, gelatinous candy similar to Turkish Delight).
