The material in this collection was gathered together over many years by Dr. Sam J. Merenda.  Dr. Merenda, a 1939 graduate of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, served as a medical officer in the 70th General Hospital.  Although he was not alone, Dr. Merenda led the efforts to collect and preserve the history of the 70th General Hospital.  Of particular interest in the collection are some of the items related to the rosters and training of the unit in the "Stateside Information" series and the personal reminiscences of former members of the 70th found in the "Recollections" series.
