Norval Miller Manuscript Collection [DOC MSS 53]
Scope and Contents
This collection of letters from Norval Miller, a serviceman in the Army Air Forces during World War II, to his mother and father at home in Festus, Missouri, provides good descriptions of camp life (including bad food, K. P. duty, and barracks inspections), basic training, work on detail, and the camaraderie of buddies. It also offers vivid pictures of the peoples and sights encountered by the soldiers in the South Pacific. During World War II he was stationed at Jefferson Barracks in Missouri, Sheppard Field in Texas, and in the South Pacific, including Guadalcanal. As Miller was part of the support staff and never flew, his experiences reflect the day-to-day routine of training and administration rather than that of combat.
