Scope and Contents

The Goronwy O. Broun Sr. Manuscript Collection chronicles the wide-ranging research interests of a physician who was also a noted educator and diligent hospital and medical school administrator,  thus also providing insight into the operation of the Saint Louis University Hospitals and the development of the School of Medicine.

The  Associations and Foundations series includes material on the James B. and Ethel D. Miller Foundation for Experimental Medicine (Miller Foundation or Fund), established at Saint Louis University to prosecute studies on respiratory disease.  The Correspondence series offers a file documenting the dismissal of Philip A. Tumulty as head of the department of internal medicine in 1954 as well as a folder of miscellaneous letters dealing with administrative turnover at the medical school during the 1950s and 1960s.  The Grants Applications series  contains proposals for the funding of various research projects and reports of study results for programs that were financed.

The Influenza series includes Broun's account of his experiences as an intern at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis during the 1918 epidemic, while the Reports series houses Broun's paper on developments at the medical school during his deanship from 1962 to 1964 as well as projections for the Medical Center between 1963 and 1973.  The series on Saint Louis University Hospitals contains much material on ambulatory care as well as statistics for the St. Mary's Group of Hospitals for 1940 through 1952.  The School of Medicine series comprises minutes of meetings of the Administrative Board and of the department of internal medicine; recommendations for participation in health maintenance organizations and other comprehensive health care plans; documentation on the issue of clinical practice income paid by patients to doctors in teaching hospitals; and suggestions for curriculum reform related to new health care delivery systems.  The Subject Files include Broun's curriculum vitae with a list of grants that he had received as well as Broun Jr.'s paper on masses in the abdomen.   The Works series consists of abstracts, papers, and conference presentations produced throughout Broun's lengthy career.
