Scope and Contents

This series, arranged chronologically, contains clippings covering the lives and work of the Spitzers.

Included here are: a story detailing the Spitzers' time in China around the time of their marriage (2-26-41); the Spitzers' "Pacific Newsletter" directed at family and friends and containing news of the couple's activities, especially Allen's studies and the pair's plans to return to China in a few years (7-4-46); an article on Lillian's work as a child welfare officer for the Palo Alto, California police department (3-24-47); stories on the Spitzers' work among the Blackfeet Indians of Montana (August 1949, 1-20-61, 3-8-63); articles on the couple's work with the Yucatan Project for Social Research (2-23-51, October 1951); a piece on new faculty member Allen Spitzer from _the University News_ in which he declares, " 'My whole heart and soul is in the classroom' " (circa 1954); a press release on Allen's fieldwork on "the social organization of tradition," underwritten by the Human Relations Center for Training and Research at SLU (6-29-55); articles on this same fieldwork that also explain the background of the Center (February 1957 and 12-13-57); a series of letters to "The University News" in response to an earlier piece on foreign students' impressions of Americans (March and April 1962); stories on Allen's appointment as Fulbright lecturer at the University of Western Australia (10-5-62, 5-16-63); a piece on Allen's study of Robert Redfield's theory of civilization and the great tradition, undertaken at the University of Vienna (2-19-65, January 1966); notice of the Spitzers' fieldwork in American Samoa (9-6-67); and Allen's obituary (September 1967).
