Scope and Contents

This series contains scrapbooks created by Nathan B. Young Jr. These scrapbooks consists of personal photographs, newspaper clippings about Black issues in the United States, and other collected ephemera. It is unknown if Young made each scrapbook, or if he collected several of them from other sources.

Boxes

Box 18: (S1) Travel scrapbook. Contains travel ephemera from various trips of Nathan B. Young Jr. Also contains Yale University commencement booklet from 1919, as well as envelope of miscellaneous family photos. [Box also contains oversize mounted photographs. See Series 5: Photographs.]

Box 19: (S2) Clippings scrapbook. “Jesse Temple” written on inside cover. Newspaper clippings cover Black issues in St. Louis, circa 1896-1904.

Box 20: (S3) Clippings scrapbook. “Jesse Temple” written on inside cover. Contains newspaper clippings, bulletins, brochures, and other ephemera on Black issues in St. Louis, circa 1889-1911.

Box 21: (S4) Clippings scrapbook. “Jesse Temple” written on inside cover. Newspaper clippings cover Black issues in St. Louis, women’s rights, and religious issues, circa 1894-1899.

Box 22: Clippings scrapbook. “Jesse Temple” written on inside cover. Newspaper clippings cover Black issues in St. Louis.

Box 23: (S5) Clippings scrapbook. Very fragile. Contains newspaper clippings on Black issues, World War I, and boxing, circa 1918-1919.

Box 24: (S6) Clippings and photographs, mostly photographs of celebrities, often autographed and dated, circa 1910-1957. Figures in the photographs include Vaudeville actors, singers, sports figures, and others.

Box 25: Two scrapbooks. Nathan B. Young activities scrapbook. Contains newspaper clippings and other ephemera about Nathan B. Young Jr. and other members of the Young family. (S7) Clippings scrapbook with “Ira Young’s Scrap Book” written on inside cover. Contains newspaper clippings about World War II.

Box 26: Two scrapbooks. Red scrapbook containing cutout newspaper and magazine advertisements. (S8) Loose scrapbook pages, from unbound personal scrapbook. Contains correspondence, clippings, brochures, photographs, holiday cards, and other ephemera.

Box 27: (S9) Two binders containing clippings from the St. Louis American.
