Latin American Studies
Scope and Contents
These records of the Latin American Office chronicle its daily operations on the Saint Louis University (SLU) campus, document SLUs Peace Corps training ventures, and detail the workings of SLUs United States Agency for International Development (AID) contracts with Pontificia Universidad Catolica (Pontifical Catholic University) in Quito, Ecuador and Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (Catholic University Mother and Teacher) in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.
These records date from 1959 to 1971, with the bulk of the material covering the late 1960s. They provide a picture of Saint Louis University's (SLU) many Latin American initiatives, from facilitating cultural and educational exchange, through the training of Peace Corps volunteers for Central American projects, to on-site consulting operations in South America and the Caribbean.
The main part of the collection consists of three series: Correspondence, Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. This material documents the daily activities of the Latin American Office and its two Agency for International Development (AID)-supported consulting projects, one at Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (Catholic University Mother and Teacher) in the Dominican Republic and the other at Pontificia Universidad Catolica (Pontifical Catholic University) in Ecuador. There is much information on the development of various programs at the Latin American universities, Saint Louis University personnel at work abroad, foreign students' experiences in the United States, and the University's interaction with AID officials.
The Personnel series contains more material on teachers in and administrators of SLU programs abroad, administrators on the St. Louis campus, and participant trainees from Latin America enrolled in educational programs either in the United States or abroad. The Publications and Clippings series includes pamphlets and articles describing SLU's involvement with Latin American universities, its Peace Corps training activities, and the activities of Latin Americanists at SLU.
