Biography

Bob Hope was a British-American actor known for his work in comedy, with a career spanning over eighty years in vaudeville, Broadway, television, film, and radio. Born Leslie Townes Hope in England, Hope immigrated with his family to the U.S. through Ellis Island and was raised in Ohio. In Hollywood, he developed a comic style recognizable for its one-liners and comedic timing. He hosted the Academy Awards 19 times, more than any other celebrity. Throughout his career, he was heavily involved in efforts to provide entertainment to American soldiers fighting abroad and went on several tours with the United Service Organizations (USO). He married Dolores DeFina, with whom he had 4 children. Their daughter, Linda, attended Saint Louis University. The Hope family visited the campus several times and maintained corrrespondence with President Paul Reinert. Bob and Dolores were awarded honorary doctoral degrees from SLU in 1979.
