Biography

Schlechter, L.N. (also known as Nicolaus L. Schlechter) was a Jesuit priest who served the Saint Louis area and its German community in the nineteenth century. Schlechter was born in Asselborn, Luxembourg on 10 December 1848 and would later serve the Missouri Province of the Society of Jesus, which he entered in 1869. He is primarily associated with St. Joseph’s Church in St. Louis, a parish founded by Jesuits that worked with German immigrants. His records also indicate secondary activity at St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant (1883) and Saint Louis University (1891). He was involved with the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary as well as the German Academy, a German Jesuit organization that was active on Saint Louis University’s campus. He died on 10 April 1903 at St. Mary’s in Kansas.
