Biography
Louisa Lane Jekel was born on 2 July 1900 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Raised a Baptist, she graduated from McKinley High School, St. Louis, in 1918. She earned her B.S. in Public Health from St. Louis City Hospital School of Nursing in 1927. From 1929 to 1930, and from 1936 to 1938, she attended Washington University, St. Louis. From 1941 to 1942, she attended Saint Louis University School of Nursing. From 1942 to circa 1950, she served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army. During World War II, her duties permitted opportunities for travel throughout Europe. Most of her military career was spent as a nurse with the 70th General Hospital unit, which was staffed by Saint Louis University faculty and Medical students. Her tour of duty with the hospital took her throughout North Africa and Italy. After the war, she was a resident of St. Louis, Missouri until moving to 2706 San Marcus, Dallas, Texas 75228. She died in 1996 and is buried in Jennings, Missouri.

This collection consists of photographs, postcards, travel folders, guidebooks and other memorabilia gathered by Louisa Jekel and her colleagues. These items provide information about the activities and history of the 70th General Hospital. A talk which Jekel gave details some of the history of the unit and several reunion programs add to information about the personnel.
