Biography

Little is known about Ruth Backof Parker, a St. Louisan who was born circa 1898 to Jessie and Otto Backof, a local St. Louis attorney. Ruth Backof was a graduate of McKinley High School and was studying to be a teacher. She also seems to have worked at Chapilon Advertising Company. During World War I, she wrote many letters to soldiers as part of the civilian home-front effort to support those abroad. She later married John Parker and had two children.

Scope and Contents This collection consists of letters from American soldiers and sailors in World War I to their friends and families at home. The soldiers provide descriptions of war-torn France, influenza and vaccinations, encounters with different cultures, their training activities and daily duties, their feelings about the war, homesickness, and their appreciation of civilian home-front activities in support of those overseas.
